Origins of 5-HTP

5-HTP is a biological compound, naturally sourced from the seeds of the Griffonia simplicifolia plant. The plant is native to Central and Western Africa due to the nature of the environment; coastal and thick forest, two habitats which the Griffonia simplicifolia thrives in. The plant is cultivated on mountainous slopes and grows thick, fibrous branches that produce long, cylindrical buds that flower between August and October. The plant is shrub-like and grows to heights of 3m.

Our bodies naturally convert Tryptophan into 5-HTP since we can't acquire the compound through other food sources, hence why 5-HTP is often consumed through supplementation.

5-HTP is a compound which plays a role in the creation of neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are also known as the body's chemical messengers used by the nervous system to transmit specific signals. They are widely involved in the function and integrity of the peripheral and central nervous systems.

Neurotransmitters are involved in the control of blood pressure, heart rate, liver function, sleep, memory, appetite, mood, metabolism, temperature control,  hormone regulation, among others.

Tryptophan is found in a wide array of foods, including red meat, poultry, fish, eggs, cheese, soy products, oat bran and dark chocolate.

What is Vitamin B6?

Vitamin B6 may be referred to as three names; pyridoxine, pyridoxal and pyridoxamine. The vitamin is water-soluble and is easily lost when cooking with liquid. Vitamin B6 contributes to the regulation of hormonal activity and to the normal functioning of the nervous system. It also contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.

Our 5-HTP and Vitamin B6 tablets

These tablets contain the highest strength of 5-HTP that we sell, containing 200mg in each tablet. Each tablet also contains 50mg vitamin B6. Due to the high concentrations of this product, each tablet is 18mm in diameter. See HERE for more tablet sizing information. 

Long term intakes of this amount of vitamin B6 may lead to mild tingling and numbness.

Please note - we advise you to contact your health professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking any medications, before use of this product. Certain medications may interact with 5-HTP, including those for depression, anxiety and Parkinson's disease, and 5-HTP supplements should not be taken alongside these medications.

We recommend that both the 500 and 1,000 tablet options are more suitable for use by more than one person. This is to ensure that you are receiving full use of the product before its expiry date. For one person's use, we recommend the 120 or 240 tablet options.
