Chitosan is a sugar found in the exoskeleton (external shell of animals) of shellfish, including the likes of crab, lobster and shrimp. The molecule is an indigestible fibre, meaning it has a 0 calorie value.
Benefits of Chitosan
Research suggests that Chitosan has the ability to breakdown and reduce cholesterol levels, supporting the body's maintenance of blood cholesterol levels. Once in the body, cholesterol binds to dietary fats, hence why we advise taking the recommended dosage before eating a meal high in saturated fat, including dairy foods, non-lean meats and deep-fried foods. On the other hand, we recommend not supplementing with Chitosan before a meal high in healthy fats. Mono-unsaturated and poly-unsaturated fats are deemed as 'healthy fats' and found in oily fish, olive oil, seeds, nuts and avocados.
Chitosan is also commonly used to maintain blood cholesterol levels, loss of strength, appetite and insomnia.
