Origins of Zinc

Zinc ores were used to make brass many centuries before the substance was recognised as a distinct element, let alone a dietary component. Although Zinc was used in the Copper production process as early as 1400 BC, a Zinc industry was only set up in Europe in the 1740s by William Champion.

Zinc is essential for all living things as it forms the active site of over 20 enzymes which rely on Zinc. The average human body retains 2.5g of Zinc which is acquired through dietary sources. Foods rich in Zinc include herring, beef, lamb, sunflower seeds and cheese. Shellfish, other dairy foods, bread and cereal products are also good sources of Zinc.

Adult men require 9.5mg Zinc per day, and women need 7mg. Studies show that the average daily Zinc absorption is 15mg.

Benefits of Zinc

Zinc is known for several important functions which make it an essential part of our diet. Firstly, Zinc contributes to macronutrient (carbohydrates, protein and fat) metabolism. In addition, Zinc contributes to acid-base metabolism and the normal metabolism of fatty acids. Secondly, the element contributes to DNA synthesis, assisting in the process of cell division, protein synthesis and fertility and reproduction. As an antioxidant, Zinc protects cells from oxidative stress which promotes the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Lastly, Zinc contributes to the maintenance of normal hair, nails, skin and vision.

Our Zinc tablets

Our Zinc tablets contain Zinc Citrate which provides 15mg of supplemental dietary Zinc. This meets the average absorption rate of 15mg per day, providing an adequate supply of the trace element.

Please note- we advise you to contact your health professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding or taking any medications before use. Certain medications may interact with Zinc, including those for diabetes and blood pressure, and Zinc supplements should not be taken alongside these medications.

We recommend that both the 500 and 1,000 tablet options are more suitable for use by more than one person. This is to ensure that you are receiving full use of the product before its expiry date. For one person's use, we recommend the 120 or 240 tablet options.
