What is Vitamin D3?
You may have heard of the Vitamin D deficiency disease before, known as rickets. Rickets was fairly common until around 100 years ago when scientists discovered the prevention factor in 1914: Vitamin D. Rickets is most often found in children and is characterised by bowed legs, brought on by weak leg bones which can’t support the body’s weight. Although rickets is less common nowadays, it still occurs in poorer countries.
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that occurs in two main forms: D2 and D3. Recent data has shown that Vitamin D3 has a more beneficial effect on the body. Vitamin D can be synthesised from the action of sunlight on our skin, as UVB rays convert a chemical in the skin to Vitamin D. Although many people don’t favour cod liver oil, this is a great source of Vitamin D as sunlight-converted Vitamin D is stored in the liver of many animals, particularly oily fish.
Benefits of Vitamin D3
Vitamin D3 has numerous health benefits, starting with its contribution to normal immune system function. The vitamin is essential for the growth and development of children to prevent rickets, contributing to a child's normal immune function. The vitamin also contributes to the absorption and utilisation of Calcium and Phosphorous and normal blood Calcium levels, two functions that work to maintain bones and teeth. This helps to reduce the risk of falls associated with postural instability and muscle weakness, as falling is commonly seen as a risk factor for fractures amongst men and women over the age of 60. Lastly, Vitamin D3 plays a role in the process of cell division to promote new cellular growth.
