Why Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2-MK7?
Our in-house team of accredited nutritionists at Oxford Vitality have combined the two nutrients together in one easy-to-swallow tablet. Vitamin D3 and Vitamin K2-MK7 work together in harmony to benefit bone health, maximising the effects of one another.
There are two types of Vitamin D: Vitamin D2 (Ergocalciferol) and Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol). The vitamin is stored in the body’s fat cells as the vitamin is fat-soluble. These tablets contain Vitamin D3, the form of Vitamin D that is produced from sunlight acting on the skin. Vitamin D can be obtained from the diet through a small number of sources, including oily fish, red meat, egg yolk and fortified foods - some foods are voluntarily fortified with Vitamin D, such as fat spreads and certain breakfast cereals. Vitamin D is essential for the absorption and utilisation of Calcium and Phosphorous which aids normal blood Calcium levels - Calcium requires the presence of Vitamin D in order to be absorbed. Vitamin D also benefits the maintenance of bones and ensures the maintenance of the function of muscles and the immune system, normal teeth and the cell division process. Vitamin D is important for the older adult as the vitamin helps to reduce the risk of falling which is associated with postural instability and muscle weakness, particularly in those over 60 years of age. Additionally, the vitamin is needed for the normal growth and development of children.
Vitamin K was first discovered in 1923 by a German scientist who gave the name koagulationsvitamin to Vitamin K. This is where the current name for Vitamin K stems from. There are two forms of the vitamin; Vitamin K1 (Phylloquinone) and Vitamin K2 (Menaquinone). Vitamin K2-MK7 is a form of Vitamin K2, the more readily absorbed form of the vitamin which naturally occurs in broccoli, spinach, kale and other green leafy vegetables, vegetable oils and cereal grains. Vitamin K is vital for the maintenance of bones, including the regulation of bone calcification, structure and general bone health. The vitamin is also required for the process of normal blood coagulation to prevent the loss of excessive blood.
