Origins of Chlorella
Chlorella is a green alga that is believed to have originated on Earth more than 2 billion years ago. The algae consist of single-cell molecules which obtain their name from chlorophyll, a pigment that produces a green colour due to photosynthesis. Chlorella was only discovered in 1890 by Martinus Willem Beijerinck, a Dutch microbiologist, after the invention of the microscope. There are three varieties of Chlorella; Chlorella vulgaris, Chlorella lobophora, and Chlorella sorokiniana. At Oxford Vitality, our Organic Chlorella powder is extracted from Chlorella vulgaris.
Chlorella was cultivated in Germany during World War 1 as the microorganism is high in protein, containing 61.0g protein per 100g, and low in fat and sugars. This combination of nutritional adequacy is what prompted NASA to study the use of the algae as a source of food in space.
Benefits of Chlorella
Chlorella is known for its antioxidative properties, benefiting our immune system by contributing to cellular vitality. Evidence also suggests a link between Chlorella and positive energy levels. In addition, it is suggested that the algae are beneficial to the gut, including the gut microflora and reducing irritation in the gut wall. Chlorella may also help to maintain normal functions of the colon.
