Origins of Turmeric

Turmeric, also known as Curcuma longa, is a large tropical plant that is native to Southeast Asia and the Indian subcontinent. It is widely used in cooking as a spice and in tea. To obtain turmeric in its powdered form, the root of the plant is cut, dried, and powdered.

Turmeric has historically been used for thousands of years in Asia. It was originally used in cooking, ceremonially, and as a dye for clothing due to the vibrant yellow colouring of the root. It also played an important role in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese culture, traditionally being used to contribute to good appetite, and to aid the healthy functioning of the liver.

The main active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin, a natural polyphenol that is identified as a highly pleiotropic molecule.

Origins of Black Pepper

Black pepper, also known as Piper Nigrum, is a flowering vine plant that is native to South India and is now also cultivated across other tropical regions. It is grown for its fruit, which is commonly known as a peppercorn. Once peppercorns are dried, they are used as a seasoning and spice.

Peppercorns have historically been used for both cooking and as a natural aid. Traditionally, black pepper was used to maintain natural digestive functions and has the potential to improve skin health.

The main active ingredient in peppercorns is the alkaloid piperine, which is what gives black pepper its spiciness.

Origins of Ginger

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a flowering plant that originated in Southeast Asia and has since been domesticated across the world. It is a herbaceous perennial plant of the family Zingiberaceae, which includes turmeric. Nowadays, the root of the ginger plant is widely used in cooking as a spice and as a tea. It can be consumed dried, in its powdered form, and fresh.

Ginger root has been used by humans for centuries, with the rhizome being used as a herbal aid within Indian, Middle Eastern, Asian, and Traditional Chinese culture. It was mainly used to combat digestive discomfort.

The main bioactive compound in ginger is the polyphenol gingerol.
