What is D-mannose?
D-mannose is a sugar which naturally occurs in many foods including cranberries, apples, oranges and peaches. Although D-mannose is a sugar, our body doesn't handle it in the same way it would handle glucose. Where glucose, lactose and other sugars are used for energy, D-mannose is not. The structure of D-mannose surpasses normal cabrohydrate metabolism and the molecule is excreted in urine where the benefits are reaped.
Benefits of D-mannose
The primary health benefit of D-mannose is due to its link to cranberry juice as the sugar subsides symptoms of urinary tract infections (UTIs). Researchers believe that D-mannose works to prevent pathogenic or bad bacteria from latching on to the urinary tract which causes an infection. Instead, the sugar attaches to the bacteria, making it easier to pass urine. D-mannose also enhances gut health.
