Origins of Elderberry
Elderberry (sometimes known by its latin name Sambucus) does not have an official place of origin, but is cultivated mostly in the Northern Hemisphere and in some parts of Australasia and South America, as it prefers temperate and sub-tropical climates. It is a staple of English hedgerows, and the ornamental varieties of Sambucus are grown in gardens for their showy flowers, fruits and lacy foliage - which support habitats for wildlife.
The Elder plant has been used in traditional medicine for centuries (Hippocrates referred to it as ‘nature’s medicine chest’), and the plant’s flowers are often used for making cordial or liqueur. The Sambucus also has an extensive history. In some folklore, the Elder tree was thought to ward off evil and give protection from witches, and during the Middle Ages in Europe it was considered a Holy Tree, capable of restoring good health and aiding longevity.
