What is MSM?
MSM is an abbreviation for Methyl-Sulphonyl-Methane, a chemical that naturally occurs in green plants, animals and humans. MSM is a natural source of Sulphur, the fourth most abundant mineral in our body. It is thought that MSM is the richest source of Sulphur as the natural chemical is composed of 34% Sulphur. Foods that naturally contain Sulphur include seafood, eggs, cheese, milk, asparagus, spinach, kale, onion, peanuts and Brazil nuts.
Benefits of MSM
Sulphur is necessary for several amino acids which are the building blocks of protein, including methionine and cysteine. For this reason, Sulphur is often found in protein-rich foods. Several enzymatic reactions rely on Sulphur in order to take place. The amino acids that contain sulphur also regulate cellular respiration. MSM is required for the production of glycosaminoglycans, sugars within the body that are highly viscous and help to lubricate joints.
