What is Evening Primrose Oil?
Evening Primrose Oil is derived from Evening Primrose (Oenothera biennis), a plant which originated in North America but is now grown worldwide. The oil derived from the North American herb is a source of fatty acids including Gamma-linoleic Acid (GLA). GLA serves as a precursor to a compound called dihomo-gamma-linolenic acid (DGLA). DGLA in the body could then be converted into prostaglandins, a group of lipid compounds with hormone-like effects and anti-inflammatory properties. Prostaglandins play a role in physiological processes including cervical ripening and labour induction.

Traditionally Evening Primrose Oil has been used to support childbirth preparation as some emerging research suggests that supplementation may influence cervical readiness, potentially improving Bishop Scores, the gold standard assessment tool for predicting labour induction.

These effects are believed to stem from the prostaglandins synthesis stimulated by the GLA which is later transformed into DGLA and supplementation of EPO has shown to raise plasma levels of γ-linolenic acid and its metabolite dihomo-γ-linolenic acid (DGLA).
