What is Selenium?
Selenium is a mineral that is found in soil, naturally occurring in water and some food as a result. The mineral occurs in two forms: organic and inorganic. Organic Selenium includes two main types; selenomethionine or selenocysteine, whilst inorganic selenium refers to selenate and selenite. Soil contains the inorganic form of Selenium which is then converted into the organic form.
The majority of Selenium takes the form of selenomethionine in animal and human tissues which is then incorporated with an amino acid called methionine. Most Selenium is stored in the skeletal muscle, storing roughly 28% - 46% of our body’s Selenium supply.
Women aged 19-64 are recommended a daily intake of 60mcg Selenium, whilst men require 75mcg.*
Benefits of Selenium
Selenium is a popular supplement due to its properties. The mineral contributes to the maintenance of hair, nails and the normal function of the immune system, aiding the protection of cells from oxidative stress. Selenium is also beneficial for those wishing to enhance their fertility as the mineral contributes to normal spermatogenesis. As an antioxidant, Selenium protects cells from oxidative stress, reducing damage from free radicals.
